Black Mold Removal – Tips on Managing Toxic Black Mold
There are few worse infestations which can get into a home than black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum). It’s an extremely toxic form of mold which is also highly carcinogenic. A home which is suffering from water damage, either from an uncorrected leak or from a flooding event, is at high risk of a black mold infestation appearing. If you need to remove black mold, there are ways to do it. However, the best course of action is simply to contact a black mold removal company.
Black mold is difficult -and dangerous- to thoroughly eradicate, and it’s a job best left to professionals. However, if you’ve suffered water damage and need immediate mold removal, there are things you can do.
Containing a Black Mold Infestation in Your Home
- Remove any sources of moisture.
Black mold thrives on moisture, and goes dormant when dry. It is virtually impossible to remove an infestation unless the affected area is completely dry. This means taking care of any leaks, condensation, or any other sources of moisture.
- Wear PLENTY of protective gear.
We cannot stress this enough: Black mold is highly toxic. You’ll need a heavy-duty face mask rated for black mold, or a respirator, along with eye protection, thick gloves and preferably a full-body suit. And plan on sterilizing -or just burning- whatever you wear.
- Seal off the affected area.
One of the big dangers of trying to remove black mold on your own is accidentally spreading it to other areas of the house. Use plastic and heavy-duty tape to completely seal off the area, to contain it.
- Start cleaning
The one piece of good news is that black mold can be killed by a variety of products, including bleach, borax, vinegar, and ammonia. There are also commercial black mold-removal products available. With the right precautions, you can remove black mold from non-porous surfaces, like porcelain tiling, much like any other kind of mold.
- When in doubt, throw it out.
Black mold can ONLY be removed from non-porous surfaces. Everything else with black mold on it simply has to be thrown away or destroyed. And this goes for your cleaning materials as well. Destroy it all.
