Important Tips for Protecting Your Furnace from Water Damage in Vancouver

Water Damage in VancouverIf you suffer emergency water damage in Vancouver, such as flooding, it can be a genuine disaster.  Flood damage can harm every part of your home it touches, as well as potentially doing damage to your electrical systems or even your foundation.

However, one of the most critical systems you don’t want to be damaged by water is your furnace – particularly in the winter.  Beyond the obvious need for warmth in the winter, trying to perform emergency water damage restoration in a home without any heat makes a difficult job even harder.

This is a situation where “better safe than sorry” applies.  It’s a good idea to make sure your furnace is protected from water damage before a flood happens, just in case.

Vancouver Emergency Water Damage Restoration Experts Discuss How to Protect Your Furnace from Flooding

1 – Elevate your furnace

One of the easiest ways to keep your furnace safe is simply to elevate it.  If you have an unfinished basement, just pour a platform of concrete for it to sit on.  If your basement is finished, or you keep the furnace somewhere else – like a closet – you might need to improvise or build a platform.

However, you do it, elevating your furnace to around one foot above the floor will drastically reduce the chances of it being harmed in a flood.

  1. Install water sensors

Water sensors can be a good idea in general, when placed in key locations where leaks could occur without you immediately knowing about them.  There are several types of water alarms on the market.  In this instance, you would be fine just using some of the cheapest types available.

Simply set one or two up on the floor near the furnace, and they’ll start beeping loudly if they get wet.

We’d also recommend setting up one near your water heater, assuming you have one indoors.  These are obviously going to be one of the most common sources of a major leak in a house, so having an alarm nearby makes a good early warning system.
